Fascination of bogs also for wheelchair users and disabled
Under unfavorable weather conditions, 16 youths from 8 European countries built a wheelchair-boardwalk in the bog-experience-station "Sterntaler Filze". Chief Adminstrative Officer Josef Neiderhell, the representative for disabled and handicapped persons in the County of Rosenheim Anita Knochner and the mayor of Bad Feilnbach Hans Hofer thanked the youths on Wednesday for their volunteer work.
Partly heavy rain during the last days caused the young women and men from Ukraine, Algier, Russia, Finland, Spain, Serbia, Armenia and Turkey to keep stopping their work.
Nevertheless Ralf Strohwasser, the LIFE project manager hopes that the construction of the 650 meter long wheelchair-boardwalk can be completed by the end of next week. The goal is to provide an access for wheelchair users and walking disabled.
Accompanying the walk in the renaturalization area, a row of stations arose, which attract visitors to stop and look. They include a lookout hill, a bird watch station, picnic benches, a rimeval forest station and also a natural peat bath. Anybody who is willing can lay himself in a 30 cm deep layer of peat.
On the stations, at this time, signs are still missing. Anita Knochner raves about an island of peace and quiet. She can only tell everybody to come here. She already was here once and had to be carried. It is fantastic that she can now drive her wheelchair by herself now.
For the county chief executive Neiderhel is the bird watch station the climax. It reminds him that he used to observe animals in the peatland, even as a kid.
As a thank-you gift, the youths received tickets for a ship ride at Lake Chiemsee including the visit of both its islands and a guide tour of the castle Herrenchiemsee.
LIFE project manager Strohwasser registered the project "Wheelchair Boardwalk" at the international common youths service, settled in Bonn. The youths, who were interested in this action there, were lead to the County of Rosenheim. The path, which is not completed yet, can be reached between Bad Feilnbach and the subcommunity of Raubling Gro▀holzhausen  - Derndorf.
